Of the Love of Jesus above All Things

“Blessed is he who knows how good it is to love Jesus and, for His sake, to despise himself. It behooves the love of Jesus to forsake all other love besided Him, for He will be loved alone, above all others. The love of creatures is deceptive and disappointing, but the love of Jesus is faithful and always abiding. he who clings to any creature must of necessity fail as the creature fails. But he who cleaves abidingly to Jesus shall be made firm in Him forever.” (The Imitation of Christ, Thomas aKempis)

Chew on these words for a little while. Look up the meaning of some of the words. As you do this you will find great meaning in the language and thoughts of a follower of Jesus born in 1379.

Worry, Schmurry...

Do you worry about stuff? Do you worry about tests that you didn’t study enough for? Do you worry about who likes you and who doesn’t? Do you worry about if you got all your work finished? Do you worry about what you’re getting for Christmas? I have to admit...I used to keep myself up at night worrying about those things. Sunday night was always the worst because I had been playing all weekend and probably didn’t do everything I needed to for school. I would lay awake in bed for hours every Sunday night worrying about school. It was miserable. Think about this...one of the most spiritual things I could have done was to just go to sleep. That meant I trusted God. That meant I knew he was going to take care of things. Do that. Try it and see if it helps. “We do not need to know what will happen tomorrow. We only ned to know he leads us and “we will fiind grace to help us when we need it” (Heb. 4:16 NLT).”

Youth News

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." (Matt. 11:28-30, MSG)

These are the words from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This is the message he wants us to hear from him. When you are tired, stressed, and have too much to do…remember these words and know they are true.

Have a great last week plus of school and be thankful for the upcoming break.

Scat (I think that's his name)...

Mel and I watched “Ice Age: the Meltdown” Saturday night. Needless to say, I love that movie. In fact I really like all of the animated movies. I especially find the Scat (I think that’s his name, maybe I just made that up) squirrell that chases the nut. I don’t know what exactly is so funny about him and his futile attempt to ge the nut, but I do know that it makes me laugh out loud by myself. Yes I admit it, sometimes things make me laugh when I’m all by myself. But to move on...the thing I like about Scat is his persistance. He has something that he wants and is going to do whatever it takes to get it. He is seeking his prize. I want that attitude when I seek God. I know I want to know him more, be more like him, and live for him and I find encouragement from Scat who will stop at nothing to get the Prize.

Psalm 23...

Psalm 23 is one of the most quoted and memorized chapters of the Bible. Because of that its hard to approach this text without some feelings of “I’ve heard this before.” Already, as I’ve studied for this class I’ve been able to better understand what the author meant by saying things like “The Lord is my shepherd.” I know that we will have heard a lot abou this passage, but walking with God sometimes means going back over something and letting His Word impact you in a whole new way. Make plans to be a part of this class on Sunday mornings over the next couple of months. />

Also, Parents...a study guide will be available in the foyer each week that is for the purpose of you discussing class with your teen. Take a few minutes during lunch on Sunday to look over it and discuss some things with your kids. Who knows, you might learn something too.

Stressed Out?

Have you been stressed lately? I remember the days when schoolwork overwhelmed me. It seemed like all my teachers would give the most work of the semester all at the same time. I'd have tests and papers and projects all due on one day. Not to mention the big game, trying to be the cool guy. Life goes so fast, sometimes even too fast to completely finish one thing before moving on to the next. Sometimes going so fast we forget to forgive, we forget to handle pain we forget to ask for forgiveness...thinking maybe in time we'll forget our struggles. Those struggles are called burdens. The more we forget to put them down the heavier they get and the harder it is to remember what life was like without them. Consider the words of Max Lucado, "There are certain weights in life you simply cannot carry. Your Lord is aking you to set them down and trust him. His is the father at the baggage claim. When a dad sees his five-year-old son trying to drag the family trunk off the carousel, what does he say? The father will say to his son what God is saying to you. 'Set it down, child. I'll carry that one.'" (Travelling Light, pg. 8)
